I'd like to think that the stars occasionally align; you know, that metaphor for any number of positive elements coming together at just the right time to make good things happen. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't and, really, isn't timing everything? I am a person who definitely runs toward opportunity. I can't understand anyone who doesn't. In my line of work, opportunity is the name of the game. Yes, you create a great deal of it, but occasionally it falls in your lap and you've got to have the skills to catch it.
Now, that noted, I'm also the type who probably misses opportunity when it arrives in casual conversation. I don't like to assume that I can turn any chance meeting in to a business or creative opportunity and, quite frankly, I'm pretty terrible at that conversion. Cold calls? Forget it. I am confident in my work, my abilities, but I get very uncomfortable trying to "cold call" explain what I do, why it's good, why it's above the fray, etc. I am not a salesman by any stretch of the imagination. However, give me a chance to do my work and I'll put something on the table that I feel good about sharing with a stranger. This is not unusual behavior for creative types, but it is the one thing that all of us in the "business" of creative work must learn to improve upon. That 30 second opportunity to show a potential client, business partner, fan, that you've got the goods, the skill-set, to do the job and make the lasting connections, that's the most basic design of how the stars align on occasion.
