WR and harmonica ace, Jose Ruiz Launch "BluzSkool"

May 22 2014

The brainchild of two Austin, Texas based professional musicians - harmonica player and composer, Jose Ruiz, and vocalist, guitarist and composer, Woody Russell - BluzSkool is the moniker of a their performance program which brings a fun, dynamic and interactive musical "clinic" to elementary and middle school aged children in often under-served communities. Jose and Woody have actually presented variations of the program for several years in different settings ranging from community centers to school cafeteria/auditoriums, but now an official home exists for BluzSkool on the internet at www.bluzskool.com.

Jose and Woody encourage an exploration of music that begins with simple lessons on the harmonica. But, BluzSkool propels beyond that harmonica lesson to include on-stage participation, singing, dancing and and a highly charged improvisational performance atmosphere that helps develop self confidence, as well as, the courage to be creative and to "think outside the box". It is the goal of Jose and Woody to help inspire a love of creative expression, be it musical or otherwise.

I have the greatest respect for this kind of philosophy! I've been cultivating an idea for a similar "school" catering to those of us in the "Disability Community;" learning/making/writing music and the arts as a vehicle to self empowerment. We MUST get Jose and Woody to my wonderful state of Colorado!!! I own a small piece of gorgeous, woodsy, mountain property that's 40 minutes from Denver. There is a cute little log cabin that is currently occupied by a 5 piece band who is using it as a "half way decent" recording studio to compose and record their first album. Their recording equipment is quite sophisticated. I watched as one of them submerged his hand held recorder into the creek (which runs all the way through the property) to be used as an "effect" for one of their compositions.) Want to come up?

Hello TheBeave, Great to hear from you. Would love to come to Colorado. Was hoping to book a spring tour that took us in to Denver but it just didn't come together in time. If you have a great venue or house concert recommendation/connection that can really help make touring to your region a reality. Your cabin sounds wonderful. I grew up in Montana, and have been through Colorado on a few occasions, gorgeous country. Would certainly have to do some fly fishing! Be well and thanks for the comments! WR
