Burt Bacharach

The incomparable composer/songwriter, Burt Bacharach, has left us after a long life of music. Songwriters wishing to study the use of sophisticated harmonic, melodic and phrasing concepts which sound deceptively "easy" to listen to, need to consider Bacharach a great source.

Elvis Costello and Bacharach recorded one of my favorite albums. Kurt Elling recorded A House Is Not A Home, a crushingly beautiful Bacharach/Hal David tune, sung as only Elling can do - a great composition performed at the highest level by a master vocalist. One of my favorite guitarists, Bill Frisell, performs What The World Needs Now, and transforms the classic in to a transcedent arrangement filled with Frisell's beautiful twists and turns. Bacharach's compositional style was singular, iconic. A legend of the craft and a not-to-miss, serious study for any tunesmith wishing to up their game.
